I could go on....but thirteen is a good stopping place.

The Little One with the Amazing Vocabulary

The little one that captured my heart 5 years ago continues to amaze me. She needs a few reminders when she comes over to get her back into the rhythm of manners and behaving appropriately, but once she remembers, she is all there and then some.

She spent the afternoon with us yesterday and entertained us as well as our friend (childless) from Philly. she often amazes me with her ability to pick things up so quickly, but the thing that always catches me off guard is her vocabulary. She says things that she has heard, as they were said, with full understanding of the use of the words and sounds like a little adult. I was talking with her step-dad and we were chagrined about the fact that her father and his parents still talk down to her like she was a baby, and then realized that she is probably talking over their heads on a regular basis. We were acknowledging the size of her vocabulary. Pipes up from the back of the car, "Mam's, what's a bocabulary?" After i corrected her pronunciation and gave her a simple definition she said "ok" and went back to her singing.
I realized that the fact that we talk to her and answer her questions clearly and simply but NEVER talk down to her probably has a lot to do with her precociousness.

Of late she has been singing Culture Club and Beach Boys songs. Totally out of the blue, she will start warbling some song from the oldies radio station. That too is my fault. But she will hear a song once and be singing it....on tune, correct words.  She does the same thing with her mom's music (top 40) and her step-dad's  (country) too.
I know she is my grandaughter, so some bias is expected, but she really is something special.

Whirlwind

That's what its been like for the last week. We visited the surrounding communities to see the small town America thing, we visited the biggest city in the state to wander bookstores (and of course buy books) plus dip toes into a Great Lake. That amazed them, and they renamed it the Michigan Sea! We took a trip up to the biggest tourist trap in the state, and they bought new luggage (to carry all the books and gifts, and cows), bunches of tchochkes and tee-shirts. We also spent a good amount of time wandering about our home town, showing off the best there was to see. We had virtually every culinary experience that this area boasts (except the Friday night Fish Fry, because who feeds islanders fish).

We were joined by a friend from Philly (actually Jersey) for a few days as well, and we all had a blast, talking and laughing and wandering about the state.

I have to admit, I am totally exhausted. Late nights talking, early mornings to see all the sights, and just constantly moving. I think a few days off, not having to be a hostess, and some sleep are all the plans I have room for!

But oh, the memories of friends and fun.

Friends from Down Under

In two days we will have visitors from another part of the world! New Zealand to be specific.

A few years ago we had the once in a lifetime opportunity to spend 3 weeks in New Zealand. We spent most of our time in Nelson (in the South Island) and traveled from there to Akaroa, Hokitika (for the wild food festival. We traveled the Queen Charlotte Track, located at the top of South Island in the Marlborough Sounds and on my birthday we went to Golden Bay and rented a "bach" (a beach cottage) on the ocean front. A major stop was in Christchurch, where we met on-line friends and spent a few days wandering the city, the zoo, and shopping. We also spent a day in Wellington (totally awesome city) before we headed home.

When we met K&J for the first time face to face, we talked about when they might get a chance to come visit us.

After years of saving up, they were finally able to plan a trip to the US. In 2 weeks they will spend 3 days in DisneyLand with one friend, and then Thursday they will travel to the Midwest to spend 6 days with us, where we will try and show them all they want to see here. Then its off to Seattle to see another couple of friends for a day and then off to the Orca's to spend a couple of days with another friend. Finally they will head to San Francisco to see the Castro and other long awaited sights, and then its back home to Christchurch. Whew....its a lot for just a couple of weeks.

What makes this all so fun is that all of the people they will be coming to see are friends met on an email list. About 8 years ago, I left the Older and Wiser Lesbian email list to start one of my own with 4 others. It was a big hit and is a wonderful cyberspace. This space has spawned friendships and a couple of long-term relationships, and keeps on going strong.

I am excited to see our friends again, and glad we have this far-flung net of friends.

Make sure you have your shoes with you

Today was the commemoration, the anniversary of the tornado a year ago.

It was a smallish gathering of about 150 survivors and many of the organizers of the cleanup. There was an ecumenical service, and then an opportunity for people to share, their thanks, their stories, and then there were the displays, photos, newspaper articles and finally the lost and found that keeps coming into town from as far as 100 miles away.

The things that will stand out for me from this day are from the survivor stories.
All of them talked about going to their basements for the duration of the storm. It had been hot and muggy for days and most people just ran for cover without thinking about when the weather was over. How many times do we take cover when it is just a thunderstorm, grab the kids, grab the dog and go. But imagine when the storm is over, opening the door to most of your house gone, your yard littered with the debris from your house and your neighbors, the roads filled with downed trees and cars upsidedown, and having to pick your way through the rubble bare-footed. Lesson 1: take shoes with you...no matter what! The other thing made so clear today is that once a disaster like this strikes you are isolated from information. Living in the suburbs or the city, you have close neighbors, but in the rural areas that are often hit by tornados, you are even more isolated. With no phone, no television or radio (because there is no power), no computer/internet, and cellphones are great as long as the cell tower is still standing.

Not being directly involved in the actual tornado, the impact is not quite as intense as the first responders or the survivors. Working so closely with them all, so soon after, seeing the devastation first hand, playing my part in the recovery, gives me a unique perspective. I hope I never come any closer than I have to that kind of natural disaster.

I will always love thunderstorms and be awed by the power and intensity of a tornado/hurricane, but there will always be another level of response inside me.

an F3 tornado (or 17) ripped through peoples homes and lives in the Stoughton, Wisconsin area. One man died, hundreds of homes were destroyed, thousands of peoples lives were irreversibly altered.

It is a funny thing about tragedy. It brings out the best in people. Oh sure, there will always be a few who are jerks, but in the weeks that followed there was an outpouring of support and help from all across the state and surrounding states. Everywhere there were signs of people stepping outside of their own issues, their own needs, their own comfort zones to help. A couple of weeks later there was a disaster of such proportion that some were concerned they would be forgotten.. But never fear, the people of my state took that into consideration, and pitched in that much more. Not to say that Wisconsinites did not do what they could do for the hurricane stricken areas. Seems that the awareness that something horrendous could happen to them, or happened near them made them that much more aware of ways they could help people in crisis on the other side of the country.

Today was a rainy, cool day, very different than the day that spawned those tornados. But, still there was a bit of.....focus for me on that day a year ago.

The date of the tornado was August 18, and on that day this year, neighborhood by neighborhood there will be celebrations of life, commemorations of loss, and block parties, picnics and barbecues, and private celebrations too. Neighbors who might not have known each other a year ago share a bond now, they share memories and support and a future.

This Sunday there will be a community-wide commemoration event. I will be there to honor the “new normal” with the communities who are now almost completely rebuilt.
It should bring a sense of closure to those who believe in that kind of thing.

School Shopping

The half-pint starts school this year, and her mom has asked for help with the school shopping.

Normally I would fuss and grump about the fact that they are always tapped for funds, but this gives me some time with the buglet, and a chance to spend some money on her with out getting flack about focusing on only one grandchild. So, I am looking forward to the prospect.

Kindergarden......what kinds of things will she need? Tissues seem to be a standard these days, and she has a pencil case and pencils courtesy of our trip to the trade show (samples are wonderful things for kids). And clothes of course. But what else does a child need in kindergarden? Maybe crayons.....

I am hopelessly out of the loop these days. My last experience of kindergarden was over 20 years ago. WOW.

But that aside, I will have fun with K-bug, shopping.

Drum and Bugle Corps -The Sight of Music

Music rocks my soul.

Corps music is something else unto itself.
It is DCI time, and i hear drum cadences and brass ringing in my ears.
Unfortunately for the third time since I have lived in this city, I can not afford to go to see the DCI Finals, but I can still remember the shows I have seen.

Lifetimes ago, on the playground of an old grade school in the city I grew up in, my then husband took me to see a “show”. It was the Racine Kilties, an original all male corps.
The music moved me and the marching was just as intense.

Fast forward a few years, and a friend had tickets to the “thing at Whitewater”. It was actually the last year that the DCI finals were small enough to be held at a local college football field (unbeknownst to me at the time), and I got to go. It poured cats and dogs, and still they played and marched. I was in my element.

Fast forward many years later. The circumstances were complex, but my best friend at the time had gotten herself totally involved with the Madison Scouts, housing the kids and trekking off to see every show she could get herself to and still hold a job. Her daughter was about the same age as some of the guys and was having a blast and my kids were just fascinated. That summer (1987) we traveled to as many shows as budget and time would allow, and I even managed to be able to see the Finals in Kansas City.

A few years after that my youngest, who could barely walk a straight line, joined Madison's Junior Corps and found he had a talent for playing the drum and marched better backwards than he did forwards.. That too was a summer of seeing as many parades and shows as we could fit in.

For those of you who are fans of the activity, you will understand that a Corps Front will still raise the hairs on my arms.

May You Never Walk Alone

On iTunes right now : 1989_madison_scouts

ps . the DCI site has lots of info and you can even download a program from any one of the corps participating for a small cost that goes directly back to the activity for the the underwriting of the programs for youth.

oh sh*t

no sooner did I send off that last blog post, than the phone rang.
My friend the town clerk needs some help on election day, would I help out...
Sure! Its a new thing, and I enjoy the challenge of a new thing. And I greatly enjoy working with my friend. She is “real” and she “gets it”
Then she drops the bomb, her assistant is not long for the job, she wants to retire. And my friend wants to put me up for the position!

ARG

another option....this one has more possibilities, and it has its plusses (like insurance, working with my friend, pretty good pay, and its only part time), but its a no where kind of thing.

It's not about doing the kind of things I want to do. its not working for the betterment of people.
It doesn't even offer internet access (i haven't worked without access to the net in years).

well, its not even an open job yet....and maybe it won't actually come to fruition.

maybe one of these days I am going to have to figure out what i want to do when i grow up!

numbers, numbers everywhere

i do not like numbers. I know they are necessary evils in the world and they do have a purpose, but I just don't like dealing with them. Unfortunately, I am a very logical and systematic person, and I understand the basics of accounting (very basic)....

The universe needs to stop sending me bookkeeping jobs.....

I take them because i need the money, but each time i do, i end up miserable.
this is not what i want to do with my life.
but the jobs that surround me keep tapping me on the shoulder when i most need money.

arg
i need to draw something else into my life to do.
soon.

Our State Fair's a great State Fair....

So you would think i would go to it more than once in a decade. But it comes during a bad time of year (summer) and .....

But anyway, we are going this morning for a little visit with a couple that we know. The guys are fun to spend time with, they aren't bar people and they aren't really sports people and like us they find they aren't part of the queer party circles. We spend time with them pretty regularly and always have a good time.

So in a few moments we will leave for the State Fair. Most of us are City kids, so this will be the closest we have come to cows and pigs and goats and rabbits....since the last time we were at a fair. As a city kid myself, the fair was never about the baking, the critters or the contests. Our fair is held where two Metro areas meet, and has always been just as much about the city as the country.

For me the fair is about sweet corn and fresh lemonaide, creampuffs with fresh cream(from the cows at the fair) and thousands of vendors, selling kitchen gadgets, manicure kits, the solution to make your glasses not fog up, doing demos on the greatest cookware set, or ginzu knives, registering for a kirby vacuum cleaner giveaway, and so much more, lots of other food vendors for cotton candy and barbecued chicken, deep fried catfish, and entertainment that you could hear float up from the grandstand.
There were so many more things that are tucked in the depths of my memories (as kids we went to State Fair almost every year).

So off I go to the State Fair, with friends in tow. Hope you are having a great weekend all!

hot, hot, hot.....a meme

Hot Weather Meme, c/o jo(e), who describes it this way:
A meme inspired by an unseasonably unreasonably hot day yesterday (and today). It's my meme so I get to make the rules, which means that there are no rules. Change the questions, add questions, do whatever the hell you want. It's so damned hot here that I won't care.

How do you cope with hot weather? not well. i do what i have to do...but am not always happy with it. the longer its unreasonably hot, the grumpier i get.

When does the heat make you most crazy? when the humidity is high as well, and the super hot days just go on and on. When you wake in the morning and the air is as still and hot and humid as it was when you went to sleep...relentless heat.

Your favorite hot weather music? mellow, calming, cool. Oldies from the summers of my youth.

Where do you go to get air conditioning? home. and then its so freaking cold that i end up putting on a sweatshirt on 98 degree days.

Your favorite place to sleep in hot weather? i can not sleep in the heat. Even as a child in the unbearable heat, i would sleep fitfully. In the basement, on the cool vinyl couch was best. Now, if there is no air-conditioning, at the very least a fan blowing across me.

Your favorite hot weather food and drink? fruit juice with sparkling water spritzers, rum and coke with lots of ice. Salads with lots of tomato and cucumber bits. Tomatoes off the vine, pasta salads, cold, crisp fruits. Grilled sweet corn and bratwurst.

Your favorite people to visit in the hot weather? i don't visit in the heat. i am not sociable, and do not expect others to be.

Your favorite way to wear your hair in the hot weather? when it was long, it had to be in a pony tail, covered by a bandana. these days it's always short....and at times I wear a baseball styled cap.

Is hot weather good for anything? spawning mosquitos and making tempers flare, making the garden and the grass grow, and reminding us what a blessing snow is.

Favorite quote about the unreasonable heat: In the summer there are only so many layers you can take off and then you are done, but in the winter you can always add another layer!
